We are pretty traditional at our house. I used to have my home decorated to the hilt with a tree in almost every room, Nut Crackers displayed on all empty tables and mantels. Now that I'm older and moved into a condo I've scaled back on my decorating. Now I have two trees, one in the library and one in the living room. Any yes, the Nut Crackers still sit on all empty tables.
The girls and their families will be coming to the house on Christmas Moring where we will have a nice brunch and play games. My granddaughter Mae will be IN CHARGE of handing out any gifts. This year we have decided to only give homemade items or buy from our local stores in Clayton. We have such talented artists to pick from. Of course Mae will be the recipient of the bounty as we have cut back on our gift giving to each other. I just love knowing that on this date we also celebrate our Savior the son of God was born.
I do miss the Christmas's of the past where you would walk downtown and window shop, put your tree up a week before Christmas and went to Christmas eve services at church. You would wear your Sunday best dresses (even if you weren't going to someone's home). Mom would make a big turkey, it didn't matter that you already had one the month before for Thanksgiving. Grand parents would come over for diner and bring special treats. One time my grandmother on my Moms side who was from Dutch descendants brought me a Klomp (Wooden shoes or a whole-footed clog from the Netherlands. I didn't know what they were for and thought they were odd. I've thought about that for years and realized that perhaps she wanted me to ask questions. I wish I had.
Well, the family will most defiantly receive something homemade from me. I won't spoil the surprise but will share after Christmas just what I came up with.
